What is elephant?

Elephant is a headless data-provider and executor service that acts as a shared backend for building custom application launchers and desktop utilities on Linux. It aggregates data from a plugin-based set of providers (apps, files, clipboard, Bluetooth, calculator, package search, and more) and exposes them over Unix sockets using Protocol Buffers, so a separate frontend like Walker can query it and render results. On its own, without a frontend and provider plugins installed, it does nothing visible.

Install elephant on Omarchy

official Omarchy package command
$ omarchy pkg add elephant

Good to know

  • A frontend launcher (such as Walker) to actually see and use its results
  • Individual provider plugins for the data sources you want (apps, files, clipboard, etc.) — the base package alone has none installed
  • A systemd-based Linux environment is expected, though it can run standalone
