What is makima-bin?

Makima is a Linux daemon that intercepts input from keyboards, mice, game controllers, and tablets (via the evdev kernel interface) and remaps them - individual keys, button combos, analog sticks - into other keys, key sequences, or shell commands. It can even auto-switch remapping profiles based on which window is focused, on Hyprland, Sway, Niri, or X11. There is no graphical interface; everything is configured by hand-editing TOML files under ~/.config/makima/ and restarting the service.

Install makima-bin on Omarchy

official Omarchy package command

Good to know

  • The uinput kernel module, for creating virtual input devices
  • Systemd, if installed as a service (manual execution is also possible)
  • kdotool, optionally, for per-window layout switching on Plasma Wayland
