Codex CLI is OpenAI's lightweight AI coding agent that runs locally on your machine instead of in the cloud. From the terminal you describe what you want built, fixed, or explained, and it reads your codebase, edits files, and runs commands to get it done; it also plugs into editors like VS Code, Cursor, and Windsurf. It needs an OpenAI account to function, either signing in with a ChatGPT Plus/Pro/Business/Edu/Enterprise plan or authenticating with an OpenAI API key.
