Short answer
omacut ships by default on Omarchy 4.x (Quattro) and newer; older installs use omarchy pkg add omacut. Open a video with Ctrl+O, drag the start/end handles, double-click to split out middle sections, and export with Ctrl+S as an MP4.
omacut on Omarchy: the 30-second video trimmer
omacut is Omarchy’s own dead-simple video trimmer — open a video, drag the start/end handles, preview, export an MP4. It’s for anyone who records screen captures, camera clips, or phone video on Omarchy and just needs the boring parts cut off fast.
TL;DR install
omarchy pkg add omacut
On Omarchy 4.x (Quattro) and newer, omacut is installed by default — hit Super+Space, type “omacut”, and skip the install entirely.
Getting started in 5 minutes
1. First launch
Launch omacut from the app launcher (Super+Space → type omacut) or run omacut in a terminal. The window opens with a big “open video” prompt. The interface follows your Omarchy theme’s accent color automatically — there’s no theme setting to touch.
2. The 3 things you need to know
- Open a video —
Ctrl+O(or click the open prompt). The video loads as a timeline clip with a handle at each end. Almost any container works since ffmpeg does the decoding, but the export is always MP4. - Set your handles — drag the left and right handles to pick start and end. The dimmed part outside the handles gets cut. For more than a plain trim: double-click a clip to split it, drag handles apart to cut ranges out of the middle, double-click a gap to join it back, hover a clip and hit its × to drop it. Playback plays the remaining clips in order and skips the gaps.
- Export —
Ctrl+S. You get an export dialog with three quality options: Original, 1080p, 720p. Exports never upscale and always preserve aspect ratio. The file saves next to your source as<name>_trimmed.mp4.
3. Keyboard shortcuts that matter most
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Space | Play / pause |
| Left / Right | Jump 1s (Shift = 5s, Alt = 0.2s) |
| S | Split at playhead |
| Z | Zoom into the clip for fine tuning (again to zoom out) |
| Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z | Undo / redo |
| ? | Full hotkey list in-app |
4. Config location
None documented. omacut keeps no config files in ~/.config — the theme accent is read live from the Omarchy theme, and there’s no settings panel. That’s the point: one window, one job.
Common issues & fixes
No public user issue reports were found on the repo — the app is young (June 2026) and the real bugs surfaced in upstream’s own commit history, where DHH documented and fixed them. All of these are fixed in current builds; they’re here so you know what you’re looking at if you ever hit one on an old install.
AV1 clips preview black while timeline thumbnails look fine
Fix: Fixed upstream on Oct 2, 2026 (commit bbceafe): Qt’s ffmpeg backend fell through to Vulkan video when VA-API was missing, and on GPUs without Vulkan decode queues it picked an hwaccel-only AV1 decoder and never fell back to software. Update omacut and the preview works. If you still see it on an exotic GPU, QT_FFMPEG_DECODING_HW_DEVICE_TYPES=vaapi,cuda omacut forces the supported backends.
After dismissing the open dialog once, every later open/export dialog silently does nothing
Fix: Fixed upstream July 2026 (commit 54321b1): omacut subscribed to the xdg-desktop-portal response after the async call returned, so a fast response arrived before the listener was installed — and nothing ever reset the pending state. Restart the app and update to the latest build; the bug no longer occurs.
The app opens and previews play, but export fails
Fix: ffmpeg and ffprobe must be on your PATH at runtime — the app doesn’t link them, it shells out to them (noted in nixarchy’s packaging). On stock Omarchy this is a dependency, but if you installed oddly, check: which ffmpeg ffprobe. If missing, omarchy pkg add ffmpeg.
The file picker never appears when opening or exporting
Fix: omacut requires xdg-desktop-portal plus a portal backend for its file picker (README requirements). This ships on Omarchy; if you run omacut on a non-Omarchy distro without it, install xdg-desktop-portal and a backend (e.g. xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland or -gtk) and restart.
Pairs well with / If you hate this, try
Pairs well with
- Monologue (omacom/monologue) — Omarchy’s webcam recorder; it hands recordings straight to a built-in omacut-style trimmer. Record, trim, done — the two apps are siblings in DHH’s lineup. OBS Studio (
omarchy pkg add obs-studio) — record your screen, then trim the dead air off in omacut. mpv (default on Omarchy) — quick preview of your trimmed exports without opening a heavy player.
If you hate this, try
- LosslessCut — the closest free rival. It’s cross-platform, lossless (no re-encode, so exports finish in seconds with zero quality loss), and far more capable. What it isn’t: native-looking on Omarchy, and it’s Electron, so it’s heavyweight next to omacut’s single Qt binary.
Comparison: omacut vs LosslessCut vs Avidemux vs Pitivi
| omacut | LosslessCut | Avidemux | Pitivi | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Free (MIT) | Free (GPL) — store versions are paid donations | Free (GPL) | Free (GPL) |
| Best for | 30-second trims with a native Omarchy look | Fast lossless cuts, multi-segment, no re-encode | Frame-accurate cuts + filters, old-school UI | Actual multi-track editing with effects/titles |
| Omarchy install | omarchy pkg add omacut (default on ≥ Quattro) | AUR / AppImage (not in Omarchy repo) | sudo pacman -S avidemux-qt | omarchy pkg add pitivi or flatpak |
| Exports | Always MP4 (re-encoded, Original/1080p/720p) | Lossless by default (same container as source) | MP4/MKV/AVI, many codecs | MP4/WebM, full render pipeline |
One-line verdict: pick omacut when you want the fastest possible trim that looks like it belongs on your desktop; pick LosslessCut when you care about zero quality loss and instant exports; pick Pitivi when you need actual editing.
How to switch from Filmora (or Premiere) for simple trims (~5 minutes)
- Export from the paid app: you don’t need to — just grab the source video file. omacut reads almost any container via ffmpeg.
- Trim in omacut: open the file (
Ctrl+O), drag the handles, split and cut middle sections as needed, preview withSpace, export withCtrl+Sas Original-quality MP4. - What doesn’t transfer: anything beyond cutting — effects, transitions, titles, audio tracks, project structure. If your “trim” needs any of that, you’re not a trimmer person, you’re an editor person: use Pitivi or Kdenlive instead.
- Time estimate: under 5 minutes for a basic end-trim, no render queue to babysit.

Frequently asked questions
Does omacut work on Omarchy?
Yes — it’s made for Omarchy. Written by DHH/omacom, it follows your theme’s accent color, and it’s installed by default in Omarchy from Quattro (v4.x) onward. Install manually with omarchy pkg add omacut on older installs.
Is omacut free?
Yes, free and libre — MIT licensed, source on GitHub at omacom/omacut. No accounts, no watermarks, no upsells.
omacut vs LosslessCut — which should I use?
omacut for speed and native Omarchy looks; it re-encodes, so exports are fast but not instant. LosslessCut for lossless (no re-encode) cuts that finish in seconds with zero quality loss — at the cost of an Electron app that doesn’t match your theme. For cutting the dead air off a screen recording, omacut wins.
Can omacut cut the middle out of a video, or just the ends?
The middle too. Double-click a clip to split it, drag the handles apart to remove the section between them, double-click the gap to join it back. Playback skips the gaps and exports the clips in order.
Why does my AV1 video show a black preview?
That’s a known Qt/ffmpeg hardware-decode issue fixed in omacut (Oct 2026) — update to the latest build. If it persists on unusual GPUs, run QT_FFMPEG_DECODING_HW_DEVICE_TYPES=vaapi,cuda omacut.
